VR Future: Lose the Goggles, Enter the HIVE!

HIVE is an acronym for “highly immersive virtual environment”.

This can be in a SimLab, such as that at University of Miami, requiring specially constructed technology in 570 m2 physical space, but offers untethered tracking of users.

That’s fine for research, but if the audience is key, a 360 degree projection dome with moving, voice responsive projection is an ideal venue to experience the full power of immersive virtual reality

The open space of the dome allows for shared human interactions, with the dynamic energy of a group and genuine sense of body motions without the gear.  Companies like Obscura Digital, Dome Pro and Vortex Immersion have been creating and utilizing state of the art surround technology, getting us closer and closer to REAL life.

HIVE is the new generation of Virtual Reality, with visions that captivate, and increasingly respond to our interaction.

When holographic projection is added, this becomes the “mixed reality" so many gamers desire.

So far, nothing has replaced the feeling of open sky, freedom of movement and social interaction, unfiltered by machine overlay.

Miami University Department of Psychology researchers concur:

So Not the Future!

Their study replicates results of previous studies, concluding, “the fully immersive system induced the highest sense of presence and the head mounted display system elicited the highest amount of simulator sickness.” (Waller D, Bachmann, E, Hodgson E, Beall AC. Department of Psychology, Miami University, Oxford, Ohio 45056, USA. Behav Res Methods. 2007 Nov;39(4):835-43).

For, Ian Downie, the self-described transformational storyteller of Vortex Immersion, it’s all about drawing the audience in to convey profound ideas and to inspire.

Adept at innovating multi-sensory theater production systems, he creates powerful experiences that impact people in unique, meaningful and lasting ways. According to Downie.“Transmedia and immersive storytelling can then be used to awaken hearts, communicate our shared history and humanity and share profound ideas and inspiration."

The creative teams at Pacific Domes International, and its sister company, Obscura Digital, have together been on the cutting edge of emerging mixed media possibilities since 2000
Together, they have helped businesses, foundations and even countries to identify their stories, and make them come alive in the 360 degree immersive environments.
